THE STEADFAST TIN SOLDIER

However enchantingly illustrated- with large, dreamy pastel pictures by Marcia Brown- Andersen's fairy tale does have its sad and gruesome ending the tender-hearted may find hard to transcend. There's a ray of hope when the lost soldier, swallowed by a fish, is miraculously returned to his household and the dancing doll he worships, but his former encounter with the evil troll looms in the background to disquiet- and to prevail, when both soldier and dancer are burned in the oven.
