by Hans Fallada ‧ RELEASE DATE: Nov. 5, 1936
This measures up more nearly to Little Man, What Now? than anything else Fallada has done. It hasn't quite the clarity, the simplicity, the warmth of that story -- it has a new quality of fantasy that somehow suggests Robert Nathan -- it has a charm and originality and poignancy all its own. The story of an old professor, lost in the abstractions of his interpretation of Scripture, who is suddenly thrust into the midst of a mad adventure, chivalry to the rescue of youth in distress, and of his muddling through to some sort of solution, whether he wills it or not. There's a Grimm's Fairy Tale feel to the people of the wicked village and the band of children who set about to save it from itself. Stark realists wont like it -- sell it to those with a child heart and imagination.
