It makes a fascinating introduction to Frederick Douglass' always revealing reminiscences as a slave in the South, as a fugitive and a member of a frequently despised race in the North, and as an outspoken and thoughtful supporter of the abolitionist's cause through his travels, speeches, and his own newspaper the North Star. His deductions about slavery and his thoughts about freedom are presented with vitality, and the book is a valuable addition to any civil rights collection.
