Professor Kohn is a distinguished historian whose special interest, for most of the past half-century, has been nationalism. Youth and early manhood in Prague towards the end of the Hapsburg Empire, then five years as a prisoner of war in revolutionary Russia and Siberia, and several ore as a writer and teacher in England, France, and Palestine before he came to the United States in 1933 to lecture at the New School, Smith, and CCNY, all served as excellent preparation for such a life study. He writes about himself naturally and with considerable pleasure, in a rambling classroom style, touching in turn on the questions of revolution, Zionism, postwar Germany, the UN, American versus European systems of education, civil rights, and the art of growing old gracefully. It is the story of a long, full life, blessed with a practical optimism and an abiding faith in mankind's ability to overcome factionalism and injustice, eventually to live in freedom, peace, and sensibility.
