On an old-timey Swedish farm the coming of a January snowstorm is a scary yet familiar event: the old peddler Jesse arrives breathless after being chased by emboldened wolves; Brownie and her load of birchwood must be gotten home safely through the howling winds and crashing trees; Daisy gives birth and her new calf must be brought into the house to keep warm. The incidents (and they never amount to anything more than that) are visualized by Wiberg with a comfortable blend of picturesque sentiment and snow-swept landscapes. A patently picture book Sweden created by two veterans who prove that with talent even a cliche can be made charming.
