A third novel lacks the narrative interest of The Racer, Top of the World and is chiefly a replica of Arab warrior ways within the demanding covenants of the Moslem faith. Auda, ordered by King Nesib who has defeated his father, beheaded his brother, to marry Nesib's daughter- Lahlah- leaves her to seek out his father who commands him to march against the powerful Nesib. With a small, sham army of beggars and thieves, Auda tracks across the desert; there are blistering, waterless marches and innumerable raids and skirmishen. Finally he reaches the walls of the city to be captured by Nesib; his father's death reprieves his life and he leaves- in exile... The heavy overlay of Moslem observances and imprecations does not make this True Believer any easier to follow or substitute for the skeletal characterization of plot. Limited.
