LITTLE TOOT AND THE LOCH NESS MONSTER

Gramatky died in 1979; his family has completed this last book for publication on the 50th anniversary of his Little Toot. The story follows a familiar pattern: on a quest for the famous monster, Little Toot first encounters a group of suspicious, unfriendly search boats. Evading them, he meets Nessie, who turns out to be as benign as the blown-up water toy she resembles; he helps her hide from her would-be captors. Illustrative style varies here from beautifully evocative watercolors of the lake to preliminary sketches, skillfully colored to blend with the finished art without concealing the vigor of Gramatky's line, An interesting conclusion to a well-loved series.
