The status of the pony club/junior dressage addicts has always gained and grown by the Queen's own enthusiastic patronage. In America, the pictorial coverage of the Kennedy children competing at formal horse shows has trained more than usual attention on the sport. The books for children on the acquisition of the skills and the necessary know-how of pony care are remarkable for their sober-sided assumption of, and demand for, total devotion. Thelwell (A Leg at Each Corner, Angels on Horseback) borrows that tone and some perfectly sound directives make up the brief running text. The illustrations are his trademark cartoons of everything getting slightly out of hand--fat little girls and their fat little ponies. An excellent and rare opportunity for self-recognition and laughter for the girls who knock themselves out at the stables and shows.
