by Harold W. Felton ‧ RELEASE DATE: June 25, 1973
Fulfilling his mother's dream that he would succeed in both the white man's world and his own, Ely S. Parker (or Do-Ne-Ho-Ga-Wa) became the last Grand Sachem of the Iroquois at the age of 24 and later rose to the rank of Brigadier General in the Union Army and served as the first Indian Commissioner of Indian Affairs. At least half of Felton's anecdotal biography is devoted to Ely's youthful struggle for education while details of his Indian Peace Plan and his confrontation with Chief Red Cloud are disappointingly sketchy; one suspects that the double role of Indian leader and government administrator must have led to some conflicts that are glossed over here. Flat but functional.
