Easily the forgotten area of the over popular transportation study units are the dockside and freight activities requiring special machinery and specialized boats. This book and the Wattenberg book (also this issue) help to correct the lack of materials. Although the title indicates the definite regional market, the text and the pictures explain and show concerns that are common to the big ports: tug boats, dredges, lighthouses, fishing boats and the unloading cranes, among others. The ""people factor"" is nicely built into the discuss on with attention to who does what and how. The vocabulary is comfortable for 3rd and 4th graders and the excellent black and white photographs make the information visual.
