The author of I Was A Sharecropper has written a novel which taps the rich vein of his own backgrounds, psychologically, and sets the story in the period before and during the Civil War. This is in almost no sense a war book, however. The war is simply an instrument of fate at the end. It is instead the story of a youth bastard son of the owner of a great plantation and of the overseer's wife, a youth whose life was thwarted by the stirring of ambition unlike the rest of his people, as he knew them, and whose love for his master's daughter molded his emotional values. It is a stirring story, a new theme boldly handled.
