While some readers found Vol. I- YEAR OF DECISIONS- uneven in its interest, this in its turn is unfailingly absorbing. In a broad chronological outline of the major issues of his administration, the substance is approached issue by issue. On the domestic scene we follow from the problems of atomic energy on through to agriculture and the off-shore oil bill, and in foreign affairs there is China and the China Lobby, NATO, the explosive Middle East and so on. Even if readers differ politically with Mr. Truman, there is an increasing sense throughout the book of the depth of understanding on a wide range of topics, of long term thinking and of courage in withstanding public opinion within and without his party.
