The two volumes include more than 1200 of Lawrence's letters, more than half of which were either unpublished or uncollected previously. From a postcard written near his eighteenth birthday to notes to friends one month before his death, 27 years of events are spanned. Moore has drawn from the long out-of-print. Huxley collection, various separate volumes (including Lawrence's Letters to Bertrand Russell), memoirs, biographies, the documents from individuals and institutions. No excisions in letters have been made. Though this is not a complete volume -- perfunctory acknowledgments, business discussions and correspondence of a repetitive nature have been wisely excluded -- where the letter is used, it is used in its entirety. Huxley's introduction to his own collection is appended. There is a general index, an index to the recipients of the letters, and a Who's Who in the Lawrence Letters. Necessary annotation.
