Beginning with Nazi Germany, an expository survey of social and political history up through the present Kiesinger government. It deals with the Third Reich, American occupation, East Germany, present West German foreign policy, political parties, leaders--and, of course, the issue of reunification. The authors' underlying preoccupations with German guilt leads them to point an insistent finger at the Germans, collectively. They are relieved to find no signs of a fascist revival, but they use the question of their past. Apart from this aspect (the authors were journalists in Germany at the time of Hitler's ascendancy) the volume amounts to a partial overview of what's going on in West Germany today.
