Most of this material has been taken from Africa Report, an African-U.S. sponsored publication, and much of it has been kept as contemporary as possible although dealing with a continent where the ""race with the clock"" is a hopeless one. The editor indicates in her introduction certain predictive trends: the strengthening of security forces; the new significance of the military. There follows a brief paragraph to a page profile of all the states, territories, islands, or independent cities from Algeria to Zanzibar, and the material concentrates on their political and economic positions, their social development, their industrial and agricultural potential, the extent of aid received, along with a little past history. A Second section again concentrates on the Armies of Africa and equipment from locale to locale. Miscellaneous material includes charts, the OAU charter, special essays on the roles of the French Military, contemporary writing, etc. Basic documentary information, for reference.
