YESTERDAY'S DAUGHTER

Hesper, daughter of a sea trader, lives on the island of Delos in the Aegean Sea. This shot novel of her fifteenth year provides a picture of life in Ancient Greece on Delos and at Epidaurus where a cure is sought for her mother's shortness of breath. Respect shown the gods through votive offerings, a time of betrothal, marriage ceremony, an exciting horse race and the relationship between serf and aster, freedman and citizen are made vivid as Hesper and her family proceed through year of ordinary and occasionally somewhat extraordinary activity. The illustrations show a faithful reproduction of events in the story as well as the costuming and settings of the period.
