Through the letters and diaries of the four women who loved him, the story of a New England Pulham is told. Jim is a tter, a liberal intellectually and a coward morally. The four women were Mary, his cousin, gentle, self-sacrificing; Barbara, new rich, worldly, whom he marries and escapes, after she has an affair with a Russian; Coss, whom he really loves but who doesn't give him sufficient courage to break with Barbara; and finally, Briggey, perennial collegiate, cheerful, banal, but there to catch him after his divorce. It is the sort of book that has enough of that recognition quality so that women are going to see themselves -- or people they know -- in every role. Watch it -- it may catch fire.
