....is ASSURED- and this life cycle of Maggie Fraser who became Maggie Bradford and then Margot Masters is the story of an assertive and ambitious girl, without any particular gift-only the desire to succeed. Marriage to Dexter Bradfield, a research physicist, is dull- in spite of a child, Priscilla, and the fixed pattern of the Bradfields, a Boston family, too confining for her larger social stride. From ""bourgeois provincial"", a friend introduces her to a more cosmopolitan circle, and Ray Masters, who has written one best-selling book, one sell-out play. A double divorce, in which each loses their offspring, takes them to Hollywood where she has nothing to share with Ray- except sex- and she redirects him to New York and advertising. The war is a hiatus (from Margot) for Ray- and he helps to launch her on the career which will satisfy her- she ends up as a radio personality, she loses all liens at home- the daughter who would offer her love and Ray who is faithful only out of pity.... The portrait of a woman who in chasing ""the vision of herself as accomplishing and accomplished"" found that she had jettisoned herself and her happiness, this is clever without being caustic, knowledgeable, and a sharp definiton not only of the woman but also of all these divers habitats. It is a book with a positive potential for sales and rentals.
