This biography of Mozart has been written by a student of music and exhibits a greater familiarity with its subject's background than have some of the other Signature Books. Basically the pattern is the same. Much of the time is spent on Mozart's childhood, but in this case it is of prime importance since Mozart was already a musician at the age of five. Careful study on the author's part has produced a convincing narrative that takes us in to the family's midst. It recreates the excitement of an early fame which took Mozart and his sister to the courts at Vienna and Paris, and if the gaiety at times outstrips the music, it serves to characterize the spirit of the man who wrote the music. In contrast to a happy childhood, Mozart's short- lived manhood saw the struggle to get his music heard, before he married Stanzi and lived to produce so much in so little time.
