KIRSTI

This is an absorbing, beautifully written novel by a well known author of teen-age books. Sixteen-year-old Kirsti Junnola learns to cope with a new language, a new stepmother and a new land as her Finnish family begins farm life in the Idaho of 1901. The struggles and joys of such a life and the development of Kirsti's love for an American neighbor are told with truth and a regard for both heritages. The characterization has depth and the action realism, factors so often missing in books for this age group.
