Helen Topping Miller continues her yuletide presidential series in this vignette of the Roosevelt family just before Theodore Roosevelt's inaugural as governor of New York. This is determinedly cheerful picture is devoted to the burly Rough Rider's romps with his children; the opening of gifts, accompanied by little homilies on democracy; Christmas Day visits by three of Teddy's former soldiers, favor-seeking politicians, and a poor, desperate constituent. The portrait ends on a note of regret and promise: the comforts of Sagamore Hill will be reluctantly replaced by the obligations of the White House.
