Jennifer is brought home by her father-in-law who is not only a political wheeler-dealer but also a Big Daddy to his two boys: Ben, whom she had married, brooding over his ""adopted"" sibling Toby and his gimpy leg; and Toby whose easy amiability is unruffled by his illegitimate start in life. Things have happened in this small southern town since Jennifer ran away from Ben with a boy who would never become a man. Toby was sent away to die; Maidie, his girl, pregnant (actually he really loved Jennifer) drowned herself; and Ben has been on the bottle. The return-- well it coincides with the old man's stroke and a new life for Ben and Jennifer.... Things have also happened to light fiction. Tennessee Williams, for instance? But it's still light fiction.
