THE DUCHESS OF BLOOMSBURY STREET

84 Charing Cross Road (1970) -- Miss Hanff's mail order love affair with a British bookshop -- found its way to many more appreciative hands than we ever suspected (Marc Connolly found it ""tender"" and ""incandescent""; Haskel Frankel laughed and cried; but someone else found her ""relentless cheerfulness"" trying). This is by way of a sequel as following a hysterectomy (Miss Hanff is the confiding type) and with a check from the Reader's Digest (there'll be another one) Miss Hanff went to London to see her British publisher and Fortnum & Mason and Claridge's (sic) and Windsor and Stratford and Marc Connolly and Joyce Grenfell. She loved every too short-lived minute of it and there will be those to love her -- if only she didn't chirp.
