Fourteen-year-old Kristin first saw the bedraggled horse with the droopy mane at the Fair. The story of the girl's desire for the horse, her almost immediate triumph, and her joy in training Blueberry, is set against a background of highly romanticized farm life. When Danny Wasilewski, Kristin's best friend, who is a gypsy, leaves for the winter, the girl struggles with her loneliness. Her prejudiced father makes the situation even less endurable, but in the end, Kristin convinces him that a gypsy can be honest and proud. This rosy, sweet-smelling picture echoes the visions held dear by city children, but may not be accepted by those who live closer to the reality.
