LOOKING FOR SANTA CLAUS

Another eccentric, animated, eye-filling fancy by the creator of Simon's Book and The Strange Disappearance of Howard Cranebill, Jr. This has to do with Cinderella-ish Maggie, her three Scroogey aunts, cow Blossom whom she's sent to dig out of the snow on Christmas Eve. . . and the round-the-world flight the two make in search of Santa Claus. (Starting, of course, with a jump over the moon.) It's the storybook world of bygone childhoods altogether. ""In Russia, they discovered a lonesome Cossack,"" and haul him aboard. ""He looked like Santa Claus, but his name was Igor."" ""In Switzerland, a shepherd yodeled for help,"" and they rescue him (along with a mountain goat). ""He looked like Santa with shorts on, but his name was Frits."" ""In Egypt, a red-suited sheik was flying on a runaway rug,"" and they intercept his flight-path. ""He looked like Santa, but his name was Abdul."" Home they fly, to where Maggie's aunts, buried under the snow, are crying for help. After a joyful welcome and a Christmas feast (capped by Igor dancing on the table), they're all sitting by the fire. . . when gifts tumble down the chimney. . . and they're ""just in time to catch a glimpse of Santa crossing the moon."" With Drescher's spiky, shimmery, casually surreal cartoons: an enticing prospect for lots of ages.
