If the illustrations for this book are as beautiful as the text, it bids fair to be one of the loveliest of a fine series, and a book to own, particularly for one who is familiar with and loves the St Lawrence. The text is rambling, leisurely, copiously descriptive, covering the history from the era of the voyageurs to the rounded development of French-Canada under English rule. The author uses his imagination to round out the picture, and fills his canvas with personalities. French-Canada today is shown through the record of a trip from Montreal to Quebec, in the telling of legends that have survived the years, in sharing personal experiences,in analyzing the religious,political, social and artistic aspects of French Canada. The last section follows the river to the sea. Beston's love for the river has something in it almost mystical; he shares with the reader a living picture of the river.
