MAN UNDER WATER

An excellent survey of human undersea activity- from skin diving to the atomic submarine- again shows Billings' skill with factual material (see Construction Ahead-1951, All Down the Valley-1952 etc.). Chapter by chapter, it is the picture of the varied ways in which man has come to know the ocean from whence he came. The thoughts of the early inventors, the modern diving of Cousteau and others in the Mediterranean, the development of the submarine to its present day climax- the atomic Nautilus these are just a few of the aspects told with a fresh note here and an added understanding of both men and machinery.
