RED FALCONS OF TREMOINE

A wholly appealing young novel of knights and chivalry and a mixed up inheritance puts all the romantic elements of Richard I's england into its colorful tale. Leo, a boy who has spent his life at St. Michael's Abbey and is preparing to take religious orders, is our hero. But there are early signs of his discontent for his parentage is a mystery and besides, Leo does not really want to be a monk. Then, a visit to the Abbey from Lady Oliva de Mardans and Sir Richard Tremoine, throws a first light. Leo is not only a cousin of Richard's but the heir to Wardlock, an estate embattled against the Tremoines which will not relish a new master who also belongs to the rival house. There ensues a long but necessary struggle. Plots and counter plots are excitingly worked out, told with the touches of humor and naturalness that make them more immediate, and at the last Leo, though his loyalties have been sorely tried, becomes the vehicle for a new and firmly welded understanding. With battles, fair ladies, crotchety lords, this is panoply for the Crusade era and good reading for the early teens too.
