Raphael's work was his life, or at least' what is firmly known of it, and this is a conscientious, acritical account of commissions executed and personages encountered against a crowded background of Renaissance political intrigue. As such, it can have little interest for young people, and even less for those who are not familiar with the painters whose works are not, illustrated' or with the works of Raphael which are not reproduced. Many--are--but so reduced in scale, and sharpness that they are merely reminders of the original. The rare reader who Perseveres will be rewarded with little but an agglomeration of information and some simplicisms:' about the Renaissance as ""the battlefield between the darkness of the caverns (of ignorance) and the light of day.
