A little more action than many easy-reading stories plus subject matter appealing to the child who rejects books to be out-of-doors, makes this good bait for many reluctant readers. Jerry is downhearted at the dude ranch. Though he longs to ride like an Indian of yore, his beginner's mount, old Applesauce, moves so languidly that he is the laughing stock of others in the group. But Sam, an Indian boy, confides that Old Applesauce is really an Apaloosa and can be trained to compete with the best horses at the ranch. Jerry and Sam become blood brothers and at the finish line on race day Jerry, Sam and Old Applesauce have the last laugh.
