PAUL REVERE'S RIDE

Longfellow's poem, with its drum-like rhythm which children- enjoy reading aloud or hearing, is illustrated by Mr. Galdone, in an appropriately dignified manner. In grey, soft blue, and barn red, the New England towns of the Revolution are realistically illuminated. Most of the pictures are artistically spread across two pages-- which seems to give the reader a sharper sense of the drama and action in the poem. The one page pictures, opposite each other, are not as successful--nonetheless, Longfellow and Galdone make a pleasurable combination.
