THE PHASIAN BIRD

Set in the English countryside at the time when industrialization and new farming methods were taking hold- around 1940, this is the double story of a hybrid pheasant named Chee-kai and of the farmer, Wilbo, who uses new experimental methods in the cultivation of his land. This pictures the animal and bird life of the forest as they face constant danger from hunters, machines, themselves, etc. The weasel kills the rat, the haying machine slices off the head of the partridge, and Chee-kai is finally killed by a hunter. Mr. Williamson writes knowingly but without any particular stimulation and his story rarely comes to life.
