San Francisco columnist Herb Caen pulls a sequel to his Baghdad-by-the-Bay (reported in 1949, p. 459) out of his cap in further flash-pattern about his city. He draws color from ""The Silver Fox"", Joe Bernstein the gambler, and B girls; he relates his columnar difficulties in pleasing audience and self, and indulges in throwing out a few of his favorite stories; he effuses on the beauties of the Bay and the ugliness of Alcatraz; he quips his way through the streets; he lingers over stories of sentiment involving little known people; he manages to include some big names as well. He has an eye for color and an ear for coinage. The result: a frothy but fizzy brew.... Give me Joe Jackson's My San Francisco.
