Episode One: Joe and dog Shandy are trapped in an inaccessible ravine where Shandy has been living for weeks on creek fish. Episode Two: A slippery stranger tries to jump Joe's claim to prime land intended for his family coming from Missouri. Episode Three: Uncle Ed's leg is broken by a tree Joe is felling (and Joe has to make a dangerous trip down the rapids in a dugout to get help but the doctor is gone but rolling stone Gill-mentioned briefly earlier-has settled down to study medicine so he comes to the rescue). In the last few pages Joe climbs the mountain he eyed longingly in the beginning and sees from the top that his parents have arrived-that's the continuity. Oregon is mostly incidental and so is the mountain-call it prepackaged pioneering fiction.
