Lear in the resort belt is the objective of this often amusing and sometimes moving first novel in which tables are turned on ungrateful offspring amid howls and wails. The conduct of Jacob Jasper, the elderly founder and owner of a New Hampshire resort hotel of the '30's, terrifies and enrages his attendant Dolphin Green. Self-exiled in a moldering shack on the property, Jasper only invades the hotel when his former guardian is dying of Pneumonia. Dolphin follows Jasper through some poetic bee-keeping, an eye-opening night of love, and his fulminations against the new generation. The death of Jasper's former attendant, his midnight visit to his wife's grave, and the vicious manipulations of his children who try to commit him, all nag Dolphin into self-examination, and finally, under pressure, he defends Jasper in a sanity trial... In spite of some lapses into caricature, this is au original and entertaining work.
