It wasn't that Rebel was reluctant to race, he just had a habit of stopping before the end, so apoplectic owner Major Lee sold him to Justin Lane, a farmer who needed a horse. Which was all right with Rebel, who took farm life on his own terms. . . until the day the dam broke, when he carried young Luke Lane at a record pace to warn the villagers below. The crisis over, Rebel disappeared: he'd gone to investigate a cat with a kitten. A long meandering story about a distractable horse who could have been cured, for racing, by being fitted with blinders, who's not enough of a character to carry the reader to the flimsy conclusion.
