by Hila C. Colman ‧ RELEASE DATE: Nov. 8, 1968
Like magazine cover copy, the title is a come-on--and ""Brains"" is surprisingly the best entree with the other two admitted as lesser variables. The first half traces the career of Sylvie Reice, McCall's Youth Editor and former Editor-in-Chief of Ingenue. What makes Sylvie run so well? She ""has never relinquished her own adolescent idealism. . . she has never. . . stopped believing that the world holds romance, excitement, and beauty."" How Mrs. Reice made it and how Miss Colman tells it is not as neat as a posed mannikin--the ""business"" side of the business is not overlooked (e.g. personality clashes) but it is underwritten (token acknowledgment of competitiveness, nothing about advertising/editorial tie-ins). The second half defines generally the responsibilities of editorial positions (Managing Editor, Beauty Editor, Publicity, etc.) and gives a vague idea of coordination. Glossy rather than pulp.
