A trendy topic for teens--very '80s--but handled well. Amanda's parents are divorced, and visitation is down to a comfortable routine: during the week Amanda lives with her mother, and she spends the weekends with her father. But complications arise: her father remarries and all of a sudden Amanda has a new (and very much unwanted) stepsister. Amanda feels displaced in her father's affections by the intruder Fern, who steals things from stores (and later money from Amanda's mother) looking for attention. This culminates in her smashing up Amanda's father's car and landing in the hospital. The ending, in which all is patched up and understanding abounds, seems contrived and facile, though the tension between the two girls is captured well, as is the rapport between Amanda and her mother. Not much below the surface here, but it's a fast-paced, breezy read.
