This is the career (rather than the life) of Dr. Spencer Munroe, a Jamaican whose work with viruses during a five-year project may well establish the basis for treatment of some cancers, including leukemia. It follows his education from Jamaica to NYU and the University of Toronto (M.D. and Ph.D.), internship, work at the Sloan-Kettering Institute for Cancer Research, and the current government-financed project. Throughout, his reactions and responses to each phase of preparation are documented for those who'd like to do likewise, and statements from colleagues are encouraging. Concluding chapters indicate recommended courses of study in high school, college and after college, and there is a separate section detailing opportunities for women. A satisfactory source of information but the man is merely a research animal.
