CHARLES II: The Last Rally

A companion piece to Louis IV, presenting a parallel reign and showing again the struggle between one man government and the Parliamentary oligarchy, and conflict which Louis mastered and Charles only partially checked. Charles' monarchical leanings, his latent Catholicism -- these are the two phases that interest Belloc most. The biography is handled semi-topically, semi-chronologically; it is not animated but it is pretty solid reading. Biased -- somewhat sober -- occasionally debatable.
