THE YOUNG TRAVELER IN NEW ZEALAND

To visit relatives and help Bob recuperate from a bout of pneumonia, the Wests- Mrs. West, Bob and Jane- go for a year to New Zealand. Before school starts, they arrive in Aukland and, after a visit with an aunt and uncle there, journey south to stay at a dairy farm in Tirau near the Waitomo caves. A visit to the giant caves, eating passion fruit, learning about Maoris today and the Maori wars- is a sampling of the many things the Wests do before Bob's stint at a boy's boarding school gives yet another side of the New Zealand picture. At an older age level than the Scotland book (above) this talks a bit more about contemporary society but while the mood is high-hearted one gets the same impression of an unnatural talkativeness on the part of everyone to get as much asked and answered within the space as possible.
