Tory and her mother are too much alike to weather the middle teens comfortably. Strong-willed and restless, her mother has turned her own energy toward community service, but 16 year old Tory has no outlet and she resents almost everything about her life. Facing an empty summer, she conceives the idea of turning a neighbor's carriage-house into a teenage canteen. Credible, familiar situations are well told and rooted in middle class suburban life. The introduction of foreign-exchange students from India adds interest and perspective. Through facing similar problems, Tory grows closer to her mother and moves ahead toward maturity.
