The TRIALS and TRIBULATIONS of Dodie Glenwinkle and Pamela Quirk, spending their first separate summer in Maine and New York City respectively, communicated ""instantly in full detail"" as per SAP (their Summer Agreement Pact) because ""As the only two decent students in Miss Nofziger's English class, we should have no trouble restoring the lost art of letter writing."" Don't be too sure, as what comes through all the CAPITAL LETTERS and exclamation points!!! is that Dodie is an ecology freak (totally opposed to the use of internal combustion ""unmentionables""), Pam is an establishment type and both are out to snare a warm male body over 18. To this end they burden the mails with a lot of sarcastic advice and confidences -- Dodie nearly committed SUICIDE except that the face of Alan Shepard, ""that sweet, simple, persevering guy,"" magically appeared and gave her the courage to go on. ""Isn't that beautiful?"" We think it's SAPpy.
