THE CHASE

Based on the play which Joso Ferrer produced in 1952, and here developed, this is a fairly effective episode of fear, and its reflex of violence, as it distorts and destroys the peaceable tenor of a small town in the south. The escape of Bubber Reeves from a nearby penitentiary sets off more than the search for a potentially dangerous criminal. Sheriff Hawes is afraid of the man he must face; so is Edwin, who may now have to settle up for an earlier act of cowardice; while Bubber's parents, only hoping that Bubber will give himself up, appeal to Hawes, and the knowledge that Bubber has killed the man who gave him a hitch home does not weaken their solicitude for their only son. Hawes, suspected by the townsfolk of having taken the bribe offered by the Reeves, still cannot bypass bloodshed, but it is panic which drives him to go on shooting- until his pistol is empty.... A bitter concentrate, this is handled with nothing to spare- and you might try the market of Violent Saturday.
