Part II, dealing with Hazlitt the Lover, alone justifies the book. It is perhaps the fullest available resume of that little known work, Liber Amoris, in which a brilliant writer records, grovellingly, his foolish passion for a worthless woman. Pearson reprints Hazlitt's famous account of the fight between Bill Neate and Tom Hickman in 1821. Interesting comments on Charles Lamb, the Lake Poets, and other interesting figures of the first quarter of the 19th century.
