A Texas business man and a lifelong Bible student evolved this method of bringing the Bible to people who avoided reading it in the ordinary processes of daily living -- judicious selection of the stories, careful editing of the extraneous matter which slowed the reading interest, use of the King James' version for the majesty of the literary style. A list of fifty episodes was submitted by each of seven judges (all of the Protestant persuasion), and from these lists the twenty six top choices were selected for inclusion. Chiefly they are stories built around personalities, and the portraits in full color, by Guy Rowe, are interpretative and often symbolic. Some of them I liked tremendously; others seemed strangely static -- lacking in the depth of perception characteristic of the best, often with a kind of crude strength not altogether pleasant. The selection of certain stories- the omission of others is going to create some discussion, but the book may serve a useful purpose as a treasury of art and religious literature. A gift book market.
