Private-eye Ben Cooperman operates out of a traditionally shabby office in seedy, industrial Grantham, Ontario. And his usual under-employment is interrupted by handsome Myrna Yates--who wants to know where her businessman-husband Chester goes during his secret little disappearances. Before Ben tracks those missing hours to a psychiatrist's office, however, Chester is dead--a supposed suicide that convinces the local police and Chester's best pal Bill Ward. . . but not Ben. So, encouraged by Myrna, he stubbornly pursues every lead, uncovering a labyrinthine trail of murder, madness, and blackmail--with its roots way back in Chester's college years. And by the time the police start agreeing with Ben (thanks to two more deaths), he's way ahead of them--his case complete, the murder pinpointed. Convincingly complex plotting, an easygoing style, and a warmly likable hero with an ironic sense of humor: another very welcome debut from Canada, following Eric Wright's The Night the Gods Smiled and Ted Wood's Dead in the Water.
