KING STORK

Howard Pyle's fairy tale concerns a drummer who helps the enchanted king of the storks, and thus is aided in his own efforts to win the headstrong princess by accomplishing three tasks at which all previous suitors have failed. The princess turns out to be in cahoots with a wicked witch, but with King Stork's advice the drummer destroys the old crone and tames the wildcat, shape-changing princess with a switch: ""Afterwards she was as good a wife as ever churned butter."" The author's fluent pace and folksy similes are paralleled by Trina Schart Hyman's familiar flowing lines and her gingerbread Tudor setting, and it must be admitted that her nearly bare breasted Playboy princess was made to be subdued by a man.
