MOUNTAIN DOG

A tight mystery set in British Columbia very accurately describes the plight of the Indians in a small community there. Hal, intelligent and eager to live a solid life, and Blackie, who is not so sure of himself, are two boys who grew up in the Slough or Indian district of the growing town of Pitchpine. has been to high school in Vancouver and while both boys hope for freedom from the limits placed on them as Indians, they are discouraged by rich Belile whose money and lumber business control most of Pitchpine. Two events that help the boys are the arrival of Rory, a stray dog, and the decision of government fisheries to make a spawning ground near Pitchpine. Belile fights the government which says his logging will the fish and as things come to a head, it is through Rory's attachment to Belile's former partner that crooked dealings are discovered. Rid of Belile, the community is free to develop autonomously. Good.
