THE ROAD TO HELL

?rize-winning (Return from the Ashes, etc.) M. Monteilhet's intentions are not good, not bad, just wicked and the naked evil of the earlier books comes down to some of the naked improprieties which take place in a (any) small town in the French provinces. A newcomer-teacher there is quickly one of the victims of the Clamavi (an extortionate operation). He also becomes the lover of an attractive older woman, Edith, and then is privy to her domesday book of revelations (secured via the confession booth) which leads to her and his undoing... Somehow the malevolence of the earlier books is not much stronger than malice here, and the intellectual sport is often on target but off color.
